JOHN KNOLL TO KEYNOTE 2013 VIEW CONFERENCE
Industrial Light & Magic’s new Chief Creative Officer to highlight Italy’s largest computer graphics conference.
19 August 2013, Turin, Italy: “We are deeply honored and incredibly excited to announce that John Knoll, who has been such an important leader in the world of visual effects and computer graphics, will be our 2013 keynote speaker,” says VIEW Conference director Maria Elena Gutierrez. “John will present ILM’s work on Guillermo del Toro’s amazing film Pacific Rim and share his knowledge with VIEW attendees during our annual conference, October 15 to 18.”
At ILM, Knoll led the award-winning studio’s work on LucasFilm’s Star Wars Episodes I, II, and III, and Disney’s first two Pirates of the Caribbean films. He was a computer graphics designer on director Jim Cameron’s 1989 film The Abyss and more recently, visual effects supervisor at ILM for the Oscar-winning films Hugo (Martin Scorsese), Rango (Gore Verbinski), and Avatar (Jim Cameron), three of the 35 films for which he’s credited.
In 2007, Knoll received an Oscar and a BAFTA film award for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. In addition, Knoll has received five Oscar nominations, four BAFTA nominations, nine VES nominations, and two VES awards for visual effects. The ILM veteran and long-time member of the ILM brain trust became the studio’s first chief creative officer in 2013.
“In addition, of special interest to all our VIEW conference attendees is that in the early 1990’s John Knoll and his brother Thomas invented the program everyone now knows as Adobe’s PhotoShop,” Gutierrez says. “I can’t think of a more influential computer graphics program.”
“Each year we try to make the VIEW Conference in our beautiful baroque city of Turin, Italy something our attendees will remember for the rest of their lives,” Gutierrez adds. “This year, I have no doubt we will do just that and more.”
Registration is now open for the 14th annual VIEW Conference, which typically finds 8,000 students and professionals from Italy, throughout Europe, and beyond enjoying the carefully crafted, practical, and inspirational conference program. The VIEW Conference immediately follows the annual ViewFest, the Italian evolution of Resfest.

JOHN KNOLL PRIMO KEYNOTE SPEAKER A VIEW CONFERENCE 2013
Il nuovo Chief Creative Officer (direttore creativo) della Industrial Light & Magic sarà presente alla principale conferenza italiana dedicata alla grafica digitale.
19 agosto 2013, Torino, Italia: “Siamo profondamente onorati e incredibilmente entusiasti di annunciare che John Knoll, uno dei personaggi più importanti nel mondo degli effetti visivi e della grafica digitale, sarà il nostro relatore principale per l’edizione 2013”, dice il direttore di VIEW Conference Maria Elena Gutierrez. “John presenterà il lavoro della Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) sul sorprendente film “Pacific Rim” di Guillermo del Toro e condividerà la sua esperienza con i partecipanti di VIEW durante la nostra conferenza annuale, in programma dal 15 al 18 ottobre”.
Alla ILM, Knoll ha guidato il lavoro dello studio, vincitore di numerosi premi, sui progetti della LucasFilm di “Star Wars” per gli episodi I, II, e III, e sui primi due capitoli della saga Disney dei “Pirati dei Caraibi”. E’ stato progettista di grafica digitale nel film del 1989 di James Cameron “The Abyss” e, più recentemente, supervisore degli effetti visivi per la ILM nei film premio Oscar “Hugo Cabret” (regia di Martin Scorsese), “Rango” (regia di Gore Verbinski) e “Avatar” (regia ancora di James Cameron), solo tre dei 35 film per i quali è accreditato.
Nel 2007 Knoll ha ricevuto un Oscar e un premio BAFTA per il film “Pirati dei Caraibi: La maledizione del forziere fantasma”. Inoltre, Knoll ha ricevuto in carriera cinque nomination agli Oscar, quattro ai BAFTA, nove ai VES con due vittorie per gli effetti visivi. Da lungo tempo veterano alla ILM, e parte del “brain trust” della compagnia, Knoll è diventato nel 2013 il primo direttore creativo dello studio.
“Inoltre, di particolare interesse per tutti i partecipanti a VIEW Conference è da ricordare che nei primi anni ’90 John Knoll e suo fratello Thomas hanno inventato il programma, ormai da tutti conosciuto, Adope PhotoShop”, dice Gutierrez. “Non riesco a pensare ad un programma di grafica più influente nel mondo dei computer”.
“Ogni anno cerchiamo di rendere VIEW Conference, organizzato nella nostra bella e barocca Torino, qualcosa che i nostri partecipanti ricorderanno per il resto della loro vita”, aggiunge Gutierrez. “Quest’anno non ho alcun dubbio che faremo proprio questo, e anche di più”.
Sono già aperte le iscrizioni per la 14^ edizione di VIEW Conference, che ogni anno riunisce circa 8.000 tra studenti e professionisti del settore provenienti dall’Italia, dall’Europa e non solo per godersi il programma della conferenza, ogni volta sempre più curato, concreto e fonte di ispirazione. VIEW Conference segue in calendario l’annuale appuntamento con il VIEWFest, l’evoluzione italiana di Resfest.
